The Complexity of Scrambling in Japanese: A TAG Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
In this article, I present Japanese local and long-distance scrambling and restrictions to this phenomenon. I will argue that Japanese scrambling is too complex to be adequately represented with TAG. Instead, I will use a variant of TAG, namely TLMCTAG. Subsequently, I also will propose to regard other scrambling languages, such as German, or Russian, in complexity classes, which is basically driven by the derivational power of each TAG formalism. This classification, though remains peripheric.

متن کاملWord Order Variation and Tree-Adjoining Grammar
In many headnal languages such as German, Hindi, Japanese, and Korean, but also in some other languages such as Russian, arguments of a verb can occur in any order. Furthermore, arguments can occur outside of their clause (\long-distance scrambling"). Long-distance scrambling presents a challenge both to linguistic theory and to formal frameworks for linguistic description because it is very un...
متن کاملParsing Free Word-Order Languages in Polynomial Time
Long-Distance Scrambling is a word-order phenomenon which is “doubly unbounded” in that (i) more than one element can move, and (ii) movement can be unbounded. In (Becker et al., 1991), we argue that scrambling is beyond TAG by assuming that elementary trees express a complete predicate-argument structure. In (Becker et al., 1992), we show that no formalism in the class LCFRS (which includes TA...
متن کاملOn Scrambling, Another Perspective
We explore the possibility of accounting for scrambling patterns in German using multidimensional grammars. The primary desirable characteristic of this approach is that it employs elementary structures with a single uniform component and combining operations which operate at a single point in the derived structure. As a result, we obtain an analysis that is much closer in spirit to ordinary TA...
متن کاملOrigami: Japanese Architecture and its Aesthetic Adaptability with the Western Theorists’ Point of View
In terms of specialized vocabulary, origami is a pattern with a fixed structure created by smooth folded surfaces. Today, the origami art pattern, or folded paper, has become a source of inspiration for architects, designers, and researchers. The definition of beauty in specialized lexicography includes the evolution of rational features, sounds, and concepts, and in a broader sense examines th...
